How to Record a Podcast with your Phone

Intro
0:00

– Today on Five Minute Mondays

0:01

we’ll talk about how you can record and edit

0:03

your podcast episodes using just your phone.

0:06

(buzzing)

0:08

Welcome to Five Minute Mondays

0:09

where we bring the best tips and strategies

0:10

for building your podcast in five minutes or less.

0:13

So if you’re new here consider subscribing.

0:16

Now in today’s episode I’m going to be

0:17

answering a question from Anim.

0:20

Sorry if I totally butchered your name.

0:22

But it’s a really good question

0:23

so I wanted to cover it cause I know a lot of people

0:24

are probably wondering the same thing.

0:26

And he just asks, “Can someone podcast

0:28

“with just a phone and headphones?”

0:31

Yes, the answer is yes.

0:33

You can absolutely just podcast

0:34

with your phone and a set of headphones.

Gear
0:37

So first we’re going to talk about

0:38

the gear that you need to be able to

0:40

record your podcast episodes,

0:41

and then also the software options

0:43

that are available for you to be able to

0:45

edit those episodes so you can upload them

0:47

to your podcast host.

0:49

So talking about the gear,

0:50

I’m going to break it into two categories.

0:52

The first one is the best quality.

0:55

What is the best sound quality

0:56

that you can get from a setup that

0:58

will plug into your phone.

1:00

And for that I really recommend the

1:02

Rode smartLab+ System.

1:05

So it’s two lavalier microphones

1:06

that will clip to your shirt

1:08

and then they feed into a little box

1:11

that you can record two different microphones into it

1:13

and there’s also a headphone jack so you can

1:15

monitor your sound as you’re recording.

1:18

And then all of those things plug into your phone.

1:22

They have a version for iPhones with

1:24

a lightening adapter or a lightening cable.

1:26

And they also have one that is just a

1:28

headphone jack, and so if you have and Android device

1:32

you would just need to get a dongle

1:33

that’s like a headphone to USB-C adaptor

1:36

and you’ll be able to plug that in to your phone.

1:39

Now if it’s just you

1:41

and you don’t actually have a guest that you’re interviewing

1:43

then you just need one smartLav.

1:45

And so the smartLav total system runs about 200 bucks.

1:51

The smartLav by itself is $70

1:55

and so you can just get that one microphone

1:57

clip it to your shirt, record into your phone

2:00

and you’re good to go.

2:01

And, again, this is the best quality,

2:04

best audio quality, so if that’s really important

2:06

to you and you have a little bit of budget

2:08

or you plan on using the set up frequently

2:10

and you want to invest in it,

2:11

this is the solution that I would recommend for you.

2:13

And I will obviously leave links to everything

2:16

in the show notes, so you can click over,

2:17

you can check it out.

Budget friendly
2:18

Now if you just need something that’s going

2:20

to be a budget friendly option,

2:21

something that’s going to work,

2:22

that’s going to be better than the microphone

2:24

built into your phone that’s

2:25

not going going to break the bank

2:26

then I actually recommend a lavalier set up

2:29

from Movo, and the one that I recommend

2:33

and the one that I’ve used personally

2:34

to do mobile recordings costs about 40 bucks on Amazon.

2:38

And so it has two lavalier microphones

2:40

again, you can plug one to your shirt,

2:43

one to your guest’s shirt.

2:44

There’s a place where you can plug in some headphones

2:48

in order to monitor your sound.

2:49

And you just plug that into your phone.

2:52

Now the Movo lavalier mic set up has a

2:54

headphone so you would either need

2:56

a headphone to USB-C adaptor if you’re using

3:01

like a Samsung phone or an Android phone,

3:03

or a headphone to lightening dongle for an iPhone or iPad.

Editing
3:09

Now compared to the smartLav system,

3:12

the Movo is going to give you more of like

3:13

a hollower sound quality than the smartLav will.

3:17

Which will give you more of a full sound quality.

3:20

But, it’s really hard to beat the price of 40 bucks

3:23

to be able to record two people into one phone.

3:26

And it does mix them down into a single track,

3:29

so you’ve just got to be aware of that moving forward.

3:31

Now as far as editing your audio recordings,

3:34

there are a couple different solutions.

3:36

If you have an iPhone you can record

3:38

directly into GarageBand which is a free app

3:40

that you can download if it’s not

3:41

already installed on your phone.

3:42

Now if you have an Android phone then the app

3:44

that I recommend is called Recording Studio Lite.

3:48

It is a free app with some in-app purchases

3:50

if you want to get some extra features

3:52

but you can use it to absolutely record your episodes.

3:55

And with all of those you’re able to do

3:57

some basic editing like cutting tracks,

3:59

deleting segments, exporting, those kind of things.

4:03

So you really can do some light editing

4:05

on your phone and then directly upload it

4:07

to your podcast host.

4:09

Well that is it for today.
